A Full Remodel or the Right Five Upgrades
Some kitchens need a full remodel: new cabinets and counters, a better layout, new flooring and lighting. Many others just need the right five upgrades: new counters and a tile backsplash, cabinet doors refaced instead of replaced, an island where the dead space is, and glide-out shelving so the corner cabinet stops eating your cookware. We'll tell you honestly which kind of kitchen you have, and quote either one as a flat price you approve before work starts.
We handle the whole remodel stack — demo, cabinets, counters, tile, flooring, plumbing reconnects, lighting and paint — with one point of contact, and plumbing or electrical changes go to a licensed plumber or electrician under the required permits. And when something's just broken, we repair it: sagging drawers, dead soft-close hinges, water-swollen toe kicks, chipped counters.

Paint, Reface or Replace the Cabinets, Then Counters and Backsplash
Whether to paint, reface or replace comes down to the cabinet boxes. If the boxes are solid and the layout works, painting or refacing with new doors, drawer fronts and veneer gives you a new-looking kitchen without the tear-out; the counters stay put, and glide-out trays fit the boxes you keep. Peeling thermofoil doors are past painting, so those get new doors. Replace when the boxes are water-swollen particleboard throughout, the face frames sag, or the layout is the real problem, and budget for new counters, since an old top rarely comes off in reusable shape. One swollen sink base can be rebuilt on its own.
Counters go in before the backsplash, since the first row of tile sits on the new top. In older Duluth and Superior kitchens, plaster walls are seldom flat and floors seldom level, so base cabinets are leveled from the floor's high point, counters are scribed to the wall, and outlet boxes get extenders so the covers sit flat on the tile.
In Duluth, removing plaster or drywall during a kitchen remodel needs a building permit, a stove hood needs an HVAC permit, and removing a wall needs plans showing the existing and proposed layout (City of Duluth). Opening the kitchen to the dining room belongs with home remodeling.
Kitchen Remodels on a Budget: What a Refresh Can Cover
A budget kitchen remodel keeps the three expensive things where they are: the cabinet boxes, the layout and the plumbing. That still leaves a lot you can change. Painted or refaced cabinet doors, new hardware, a tile backsplash, a new faucet, brighter ceiling and under-cabinet lights, fresh paint and a new floor can make the room feel new. National cost guides put a minor kitchen remodel at about $10,000–$20,000, according to HomeAdvisor. That's a U.S. range, not our price, and a refresh built from a few of those items may come in under it, since none of them involves new cabinets or moving a drain.
Our own planning ranges make it easy to rough out the pieces: $450–$1,200 for a typical backsplash run, $130–$260 to replace a faucet, $95–$220 per light fixture swap, $350–$900 to paint a room, and $3–$7 per square foot to lay LVP, with the fixtures, tile and planks on top. Add up the items you want and you'll see quickly whether your budget is a refresh or a remodel. Under-cabinet lights that need new wiring are done by a licensed electrician under an electrical permit. Your firm written quote is the real number.
How to Remodel a Galley Kitchen
A galley kitchen, with two parallel cabinet runs and a walkway between them, works better than its size suggests, because the sink, range and refrigerator are only a step or two apart. Remodeling one usually means making the most of that shape rather than fighting it. Keep the sink on its current wall so the drain doesn't move, run the counter as one unbroken work surface where you can, and trade deep base shelves for drawers and glide-out trays, so nobody kneels in a narrow aisle to reach the back of a cabinet.
Light and openness do the rest. Under-cabinet lights brighten the counters that a ceiling fixture shadows, lighter cabinet and wall colors keep a narrow room from closing in, and a tall pantry at one end can replace a run of upper cabinets. Some galleys can be opened at one end into the dining room. In Duluth, removing a wall needs plans showing the existing and proposed layout (City of Duluth), and a load-bearing wall needs a beam sized for the span; our home remodeling page covers that work.
Cabinet Installation and Kitchen Design Help in Duluth and Superior
Kitchen design starts with the layout, settled before anything is ordered: where the sink, range and refrigerator sit, how the doors and drawers swing, where the walkway is and what the walls behind it hold. You choose and buy the cabinets, counters and appliances from the supplier you prefer; we do the cabinet installation, leveling, scribing to uneven walls and floors, trim and the finish work.
Cabinets go in after the walls are finished and before the counter template, so a delay in one step shows up in the next. We lay that order out in the written quote.
Repair, Replace or Call a Specialist? Kitchen Remodel Decisions
Start with the cabinet boxes and the plumbing: if both are sound, repair, reface or refresh. The last column shows who does each fix.
| What you're seeing | Likely cause | Usual fix | Who handles it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boxes are solid but doors are dated or peeling | Worn finish or failing thermofoil | Paint or reface with new doors, drawer fronts and hardware | Us |
| Sink base is swollen, soft or stained | Slow leak under the sink | Fix the leak, then rebuild or replace that one base cabinet | Us; a licensed plumber if the drain or supply changes |
| Face frames sag and boxes are swollen throughout | Water-damaged particleboard cabinets | Replace the cabinets and plan on new counters | Us |
| Counter is chipped, burned or lifting at the seams | Worn laminate or a failed seam | Replace the top, then set the backsplash on it | Us; cabinets and counters need no permit in Duluth |
| You want a new range hood vented outdoors | Hood needs ducting and a clear path outside | Install the hood and duct it outdoors | Us, and Duluth asks for an HVAC permit |
| You want under-cabinet lights or extra outlets | New wiring or circuits required | Run new circuits, then set fixtures and outlets | A licensed electrician under an electrical permit |
| You want the kitchen opened into the dining room | Wall may carry the floor or roof above | Beam sized for the span; Duluth wants layout plans | Us for framing; see home remodeling |
Working With the Northland's Older Kitchens
Twin Ports kitchens often hide surprises — plaster walls behind the backsplash zone, floors that have settled a half-inch across the run, cast-iron drains where the new sink goes. We measure and scribe for the house you actually have, so cabinets sit level and counters meet walls cleanly even when the 1925 framing has opinions.
Kitchen Remodeling in Duluth, Superior and Nearby Towns
A kitchen remodel touches more trades than almost any other room: cabinets and counters, plaster or drywall, a sink drain, new circuits and a range hood. Every city, township and county around the Twin Ports draws its permit line in a different place, and the age of the house decides what comes out of the walls. Here is how the same kitchen job changes from Duluth to Superior to the townships, with the rule and the source for each. Whatever the address, we check what it needs before we quote.
Kitchen Remodeling in Duluth, MN
Duluth lets cabinets, countertops and painting go ahead without a permit, but once plaster or sheetrock comes off the walls a building permit is needed, and removing a wall takes plans showing the existing and proposed layout. The city adds that kitchen remodels usually need a plumbing permit, an electrical permit and an HVAC permit for the stove hood (City of Duluth).
Electrical permits are applied for through the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, not City Hall (City of Duluth), and new circuits are run by a licensed electrician under that permit. Any plumbing that is touched, and any wiring that is exposed, generally has to be brought up to code (City of Duluth).
House age changes the tear-out. An estimated 43% of Duluth’s housing was built before 1940 (Maxfield Research for the City of Duluth), and in West Duluth a large share of homes, likely a majority, predate 1939 (Wikipedia). In any home built before 1978, the EPA’s lead rule covers demolition of painted surfaces regardless of size (EPA), so removing painted plaster behind old cabinets is planned with containment and lead-safe cleanup. Those plaster walls are seldom flat, so new base cabinets are leveled from the floor’s high point and counters are scribed to the wall.
Kitchen Remodeling in Superior, WI
Superior spells out its no-permit kitchen work: replacing or removing cabinets without changing the layout, a built-in cabinet, floor or wall tile and the cement board under it, a replacement light fixture, drywall or plaster repair under 100 square feet, and connecting a new gas range to existing gas piping. The same list warns that plumbing and electrical permits may still apply and that lead-safe practices may be required (City of Superior). A remodel that changes the layout or opens more wall than that goes to the city for a building permit; allow 10 business days for review once the application is complete (City of Superior).
Wisconsin also controls who can apply. State law says no one may obtain a building permit without a state certificate unless they are the owner who lives, or will live, in the dwelling (Wis. Stat. 101.654), so the permit is pulled by whoever the office requires, and we confirm that before quoting. If the address is in the Village of Superior rather than the city, the village office issues building permits, not the City of Superior (Village of Superior).
Hermantown, Proctor and Rice Lake
In Hermantown, kitchen appliances, interior painting and flooring need no permit (City of Hermantown), and Proctor exempts painting, tile, flooring, cabinets, countertops and vanities from building permits while sending electrical permits to the state through Minnesota DLI (City of Proctor). The kitchens are younger in Hermantown, where the median home was built in 1993 against 1951 in Duluth (Census Reporter), so walls are far more likely to be drywall than plaster, and opening a pass-through or patching around new cabinets is drywall work. Rice Lake is its own city with its own permit office, so a remodel there is checked with the city.
Cloquet and Moose Lake
Cloquet burned almost flat in the fire of October 12, 1918 (MNopedia), so its older kitchens sit in houses from the rebuilding that followed, still inside the EPA’s pre-1978 lead rule for demolition of painted surfaces. The Town of Thomson issues building, plumbing and HVAC permits for Esko and Harney, with electrical permits going through the state inspector, so a kitchen there can involve the township and the state at once. In Moose Lake, painting and cabinet or vanity replacement need no permit (City of Moose Lake), so a cabinet-and-counter refresh can start as soon as the materials arrive.
Townships Around Duluth and Rural Carlton County
St. Louis County does not administer the State Building Code; in the townships it zones, such as Twig, Saginaw, Fredenberg and Canyon, its land use permit covers building, moving or adding to structures and changes to a building’s height, projection or use (St. Louis County). Rural Carlton County around Mahtowa likewise does not enforce the building code, and its FAQ notes that electrical work is regulated by Minnesota DLI (Carlton County). So a kitchen that stays inside the existing walls usually has no building permit to pull there, but new circuits still go to a licensed electrician under an electrical permit.
The bigger rural difference is the drain. If the house runs on a septic system, the University of Minnesota’s septic program says not to use a garbage disposal or put vegetables, meat, fat, oil, coffee grounds and other food down the drain (UMN Onsite Sewage Treatment Program). A septic-home kitchen in Lakewood, Island Lake or Simar is planned without a disposal unless you have talked it through with whoever maintains your system, and a scrap bin beside the sink takes its place.
Town of Superior, Parkland and Nearby Wisconsin Towns
In the Town of Superior communities such as Riverview, Boylston and Dewey, and in Parkland places like South Range and Cutter, a kitchen that stays inside the house is a question for the town’s building inspector; the Town of Parkland has enforced the Uniform Dwelling Code itself since 2005 (Wisconsin DSPS). A bump-out that adds space is different, because Douglas County requires a land use permit before building any structure (Douglas County). Douglas County also issues the septic permits for homes that are not on sewer (Douglas County), and on a septic system the same no-disposal advice applies.
Before a kitchen job starts, it helps to know the office for your address. The Minnesota and Wisconsin lists give the name, phone number and exemptions for each town.
Getting a Kitchen Quote and How the Job Runs
What to Send for a Kitchen Remodeling Quote
Start with photos of the whole kitchen from each corner, then close-ups of the cabinet under the sink, any damaged doors or drawers, and the spot where the counter meets the wall. Add the length of each cabinet run and the ceiling height, and tell us what stays, what goes and what you're still deciding, like refacing versus new cabinets. If you've already picked cabinets, counters or tile, send the product links or order sheet so we can check the sizes before anything arrives.
Before requesting a quote, include: Photos from each corner, the sink base and any damage; Length of each cabinet run and the ceiling height; What stays, what goes and any products you've picked. For a way to sort and prioritize the details, see the repair-list planning guide.

- Pick a day. Choose a date that works for your household and the job is scheduled for it.
- Work done, then a walkthrough. When the kitchen work is done we clean up and walk it through with you, and a written guarantee says we will redo failed workmanship at no charge.
Kitchen Questions
Does a small kitchen remodel need a permit in Duluth or Superior?
Usually not for the finish work. The City of Duluth exempts cupboards, countertops, painting and floor coverings from building permits, but an alteration that affects more than half a sheet of drywall needs one. The City of Superior exempts replacing kitchen cabinets without changing the layout, along with flooring, tile and paint. In both cities, moving plumbing or adding circuits brings in the licensed trade and its own permit.
What does a 'small kitchen remodel' typically include?
A common package: refaced or repainted cabinets, new counters, tile backsplash, new sink and faucet, updated hardware and lighting. Layout stays put — which is exactly why it's fast and affordable. We'll scope it to your budget with a written price from your photos and list.
Can you install cabinets or counters I bought myself?
Yes. IKEA, box-store and online-ordered cabinets and prefab counters are all fine to install. Send the order sheet or product links before delivery so we can check the sizes against your walls, fillers and appliance openings, and we'll flag anything that looks off before demo day, not after. Open and check each box when it arrives, since returns and damage claims go through the seller.
Do I need a plumber and electrician too?
Possibly, even for a like-for-like replacement. Moving a drain, adding a supply line or running new circuits always goes to a licensed plumber or a licensed electrician under the required permit, and whether a straight swap needs one depends on the state and the work. We confirm who does each part, and who holds any permit, before quoting. The Minnesota and Wisconsin credential guide explains the rules.
How much does a kitchen remodel cost?
National cost guides put a kitchen remodel at about $14,588–$41,559, according to HomeAdvisor, and the same guide puts minor remodels (paint, faucets, a backsplash, lower-end materials) at $10,000–$20,000. Those are U.S. ranges, not our prices. Cabinets, countertops, layout changes and any plumbing or electrical moves drive the total, and your firm written quote, approved before work starts, is the real number.
How much does cabinet installation cost?
National cost guides put cabinet installation labor at about $50–$450 per linear ft, according to HomeAdvisor, not counting the cabinets themselves. That is a U.S. range, not our price. The number of wall and base cabinets, filler strips and crown molding, and walls or floors that are out of level in an older house all change the work. Installing cabinets and countertops needs no building permit in Duluth, and your quote in writing is the real number.
What changes the price of a tile backsplash?
Tile size and pattern, removing an old backsplash, prep on uneven plaster walls and the number of outlets that need box extenders all change the scope. Our planning guide lists $450–$1,200 for a typical kitchen backsplash run, with the tile as its own line. You can supply the tile or we can source it, and your flat written quote is the real number.
How long does a kitchen remodel take in Duluth?
A typical sequence runs design and layout, cabinet and countertop orders, demolition, rough-in by licensed trades with inspections where permits apply, then cabinets, counters, backsplash and fixtures. The waiting is usually in the orders, since countertops are commonly measured after cabinets are set, and in inspections. Duluth's small-projects page also notes a permit becomes invalid after 180 days of inactivity. Your written quote lists the schedule.
What kitchen remodeling tasks are best left to professionals?
Anything that changes the plumbing, wiring, gas or ventilation, plus anything structural. In Duluth, work that alters the water supply needs a plumbing permit and new outlets or lights need an electrical permit (City of Duluth), and a range hood needs an HVAC permit (interior remodels); new wiring is done by a licensed electrician under that permit. Good jobs to do yourself: emptying the cabinets, removing hardware, patching small holes and painting the walls before the crew arrives.
How much does it cost to replace a kitchen faucet?
Our planning range for a kitchen faucet replacement is $130–$260, plus the faucet, with new supply lines and a leak test included. A pull-down sprayer, a separate side spray or soap dispenser, a disposal in the way, or seized nuts under an older sink can add to the job. Reconnecting a faucet without altering the water supply needs no permit in Duluth, and Superior's Permits Not Required list includes replacing a sink faucet without altering the piping. See faucet and plumbing work.
How much does a 10x10 kitchen remodel cost?
National cost guides put kitchen remodels at $75–$250 per sq ft (HomeAdvisor), so a 10-by-10 kitchen's 100 square feet, or a 12-by-12 kitchen's 144, gives you a rough starting point. That's a U.S. range, not our price. In a small kitchen, the choices move the number more than the floor area: refaced or new cabinets, laminate or stone counters, and whether the sink or range moves. Your flat written quote, approved before work starts, is the real number.
Should I remodel my kitchen before selling my house?
Usually, fix and freshen it instead. A dripping faucet, a swollen sink base, chipped counters, sagging drawers and dim lighting all stand out to buyers and inspectors, and repairing them costs far less than a new kitchen. A full remodel right before listing means choosing finishes for someone else's taste on a short timeline, and what any remodel returns depends on your house and neighborhood. Paint, new hardware, a backsplash and repaired doors and drawers make a sensible pre-listing list; a local agent can tell you what buyers expect.
What should you not do in a kitchen remodel?
Don't tear out the old kitchen before the new cabinets have arrived and been checked, and don't order cabinets before choosing the appliances, sink and faucet they have to fit. Other costly mistakes: planning a range hood with nowhere to vent it, moving the sink without budgeting for the plumbing, laying a floating floor under cabinets when its maker says not to, and skipping the permits Duluth requires for plaster or drywall removal, new wiring and a hood. Each one costs more to fix afterward than to plan for.
Where do you start with a kitchen remodel?
Start with what doesn't work now, then measure and set a budget before choosing anything. List what bothers you: too little counter, a dead corner, dim light, no spot for recycling. Measure each wall, window and doorway and the ceiling height, and decide whether the layout stays. Next, pick the appliances, sink and faucet, because the cabinet order depends on their sizes. Demolition comes last in the planning, once the cabinets are on hand and checked, so the kitchen stays usable as long as possible.
How do you install crown molding on kitchen cabinets?
It's fastened to the cabinets, not the ceiling. A wood nailer strip is screwed along the top of the upper cabinets, and the crown is cut, fitted at the corners and nailed to that strip, so it moves with the cabinets. Ceilings in older Duluth homes are seldom level, so either leave a small, even gap above the crown or scribe a filler to the ceiling. Finish the crown to match the cabinets so it reads as part of them. Our carpentry page covers other trim work.
Can you finance a kitchen remodel?
Yes, through a bank or credit union you choose, often with a home equity loan or line of credit. The CFPB explains that a home equity loan pays one lump sum, while a HELOC lets you draw money several times up to a limit, and that both are second mortgages paid on top of your first (CFPB). The FTC says never to agree to financing through your contractor without shopping around and comparing loan terms (FTC). Your written price gives the lender the scope.
How do you survive a kitchen remodel?
Set up a temporary kitchen before demolition starts. Move the refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and a toaster oven or electric skillet to a dining room or basement corner, and keep a bin of plates, a knife, a cutting board and dish soap beside them. Wash dishes in a laundry or bathroom sink, and plan simple meals for the days the water is off. Ask for a schedule showing when the sink and range are out of service, and keep kids and pets out of the work area.
What crown molding goes with Shaker cabinets?
A simple profile, to match Shaker's flat, square-edged door panels. A small cove, a plain stepped crown, or a flat square board with a small bead along its edge fits the style better than a large, ornate crown. Finish it the same as the cabinet boxes so it reads as part of them. Where the upper cabinets stop short of the ceiling, a flat filler strip topped by a small crown closes the gap cleanly. The installation question above explains how cabinet crown is fastened.
Which kitchen layout is most efficient?
The one that keeps the sink, range and refrigerator close without crowding them. The National Kitchen & Bath Association's planning guidelines say the three distances between them should total no more than 26 feet, with no single leg under 4 feet or over 9, and no major traffic path through that triangle (NKBA). They also call for a work aisle at least 42 inches wide for one cook and 48 for two. Galley, L-shaped and U-shaped kitchens can all meet that.
Will a kitchen remodel get rid of roaches?
Not by itself, though it can help. University of Minnesota Extension says to caulk the cracks where cockroaches hide, repair leaky pipes and faucets, and keep food in sealed containers, because without food and water they can't survive and reproduce; for an infestation, it says it's best to hire a pest management service (UMN Extension). A remodel is a good time to seal gaps behind cabinets and around pipes, but have the roaches treated first so they don't settle into the new cabinets.
Can I still use my kitchen during a cabinet or countertop update?
Yes, for most of the job. Painting or refacing takes the doors and drawer fronts off, and the boxes are emptied while paint is sprayed, but the sink stays in use between work sessions. A counter swap is different: the sink is out from tear-out until the new top is set and the faucet reconnected, a day or two for laminate or butcher block and longer for a top made to order. Ask us to flag those days so you can plan simple meals around them.
