An above-ground pool is only as good as the ground under it. Set on a slope or a soft spot, the wall and liner carry uneven pressure, and the problem only grows once the pool is full. So setup starts with the spot: level or close to it, well drained, away from trees and clear of overhead lines, with room for the pump and filter and power within reach. Above-Ground Pool Setup, Step by Step
Setup starts with the ground. Pick a spot that's level or close to it, drains well, and sits away from trees, whose roots push up under a liner and whose leaves end up in the water, and clear of overhead power lines. We strip the sod and level the footprint by cutting down the high side rather than building up the low side, since fill settles once the water's weight is on it. Then comes the base your pool's instructions call for: a smooth bed of sand, a foam or fabric pad, or both, with solid blocks under the uprights where the pool needs them.
Assembly follows the pool's instructions: the bottom track, wall, liner, uprights and top rails for a steel-wall pool, or the frame and liner for a soft-sided or frame pool. The liner gets set smooth before the water goes in, then the skimmer, return fitting, pump and filter are connected. The pump runs on a GFCI-protected outlet, and pump makers warn against extension cords. If there's no outlet in reach, you'll need a licensed electrician to add one under an electrical permit; we can point you to one and schedule the setup around that work. Then the pool fills slowly while we watch the liner, and the pump starts.
Pool Opening, Closing and Cleanup
Spring opening starts with the cover: standing water and leaves come off first so the mess doesn't end up in the pool, then the cover is cleaned and dried for storage. Plugs come out, the pump, filter and hoses go back on, the water is topped up, and the system is restarted and checked for leaks. The start-of-season cleanup follows: skimming, brushing the walls and vacuuming the floor. Once the water is circulating, test and balance it before anyone swims, following the labels on the products you use, or take a sample to a pool supply store for testing.
Fall closing has to beat freeze-up. The pool gets a last cleaning, the water is lowered or the skimmer plugged as the maker directs, and the pump, filter and hoses are drained and stored where they won't freeze. An air pillow goes under the winter cover to take ice pressure, and the cover is secured against wind. The end-of-season cleanup is what makes spring easier: fewer leaves under the cover, a clean filter, and a liner that wasn't left dirty all winter. Soft-sided and seasonal pools get taken down, dried and packed for storage instead.

Up here, freeze-up ends the pool season, and it doesn't wait for a convenient weekend. Water left in a pump, filter or hose can freeze and crack it, so fall closing means getting the water out of the equipment, not just throwing a cover over the pool. Snow and ice pile weight onto a winter cover, too, which is why it goes on snug and secured. Yards matter as well: plenty of Duluth lots slope, and a pool can't sit on a slope, so a level spot may take real digging or a small retaining wall first.

Do I need a permit for an above-ground pool in Duluth or Superior?
In Duluth, a full-size pool usually does. Only prefabricated above-ground pools up to 5,000 gallons and up to 24 inches deep on a residential property skip the building permit; larger or deeper pools need one (City of Duluth), and most full-size pools are deeper than 24 inches. Pools aren't on Superior's Permits Not Required list, so call building inspection at (715) 395-7288 before you set one up. A new outlet for the pump needs an electrical permit in both cities (Duluth, Superior).
When should I close my above-ground pool in the Northland?
Before the first hard freeze, not after it. Water left in the pump, filter and hoses can freeze and crack them, so the closing has to happen while that water can still be drained. Plan it for when the swimming is done and nights are turning cold, and book early, since fall closings bunch up in the same few weeks. If a freeze is forecast before your closing date, drain the pump, filter and hoses and bring them inside.
Should I drain my above-ground pool for the winter?
No, not a steel-wall pool with a vinyl liner. An empty liner can shrink and may not fit back in place, and an empty wall is easier for wind and snow to damage. Instead, lower the water or plug the skimmer as your pool's maker directs, drain the equipment, and secure the winter cover; an air pillow under the cover helps take ice pressure off the walls. Soft-sided and many frame pools are the exception: their makers typically call for draining and taking them down before freezing weather.
Can an above-ground pool go on a sloped yard?
Only after the spot under it is made level. A pool can't be leveled by packing sand under the low side, because fill settles under the weight of the water and the wall ends up out of level again. The ground gets cut down to the level of the low side instead, and on a steeper slope that may leave a bank that needs a small retaining wall. Duluth's hillside lots can need this step, so send photos that show the slope.
Can you take down and store a soft-sided pool for the winter?
Yes. We drain it, clean the liner and make sure everything is fully dry before the liner, frame, pump and hoses are packed for storage. Drying is the step that matters most, since a liner put away damp can mildew by spring. Store it indoors, somewhere it won't freeze or get chewed on, and follow your pool's manual for folding and storage. In spring, we can set it back up, and it's a good time to fix a spot that settled last season.
How level does the ground need to be for an above-ground pool?
Level to within the tolerance your pool's instructions give, which is far flatter than a lawn that looks flat. Judge it with a long straight board and a level, or a laser level, across the whole footprint, not by eye. Even a small slope shows up as a water line that's visibly higher on one side, and it puts extra strain on the wall and liner. That's why leveling usually takes more time than assembly.
