Small Electrical Work

Plan the Lighting or Smart-Home Work

We aren't electricians: we swap fixtures, fans and switches on existing boxes, and new circuits, outlets or panel work go to a licensed electrician under an electrical permit. A swap isn't automatically outside electrical licensing just because the location stays the same, so the written quote names who does each part. For a light fixture or ceiling fan, send the product model, the ceiling height and a photo of the fixture that's up now; the mounting support, wiring condition and access shape the work.

For doorbells, cameras, locks or thermostats, tell us whether the product runs on batteries, plugs in or is wired, and send its compatibility list. The quote spells out what setup is included.

Light Fixture Replacement and Ceiling Fan Installation on Existing Wiring

Replacing a light or hanging a fan where a fixture already hangs uses the box and wires that are there: the breaker goes off, the old fixture comes down, we check the box and connections, then mount, connect and test the new one. Fans ask more of a ceiling. Fan makers call for a box or brace rated for fan support, since a fan's weight and motion can work a light-only box loose; an unrated box gets a fan brace first. On low ceilings a flush-mount fan keeps the blades out of reach; on high or sloped ceilings a longer downrod drops them to where they move air.

Duluth's older plaster-ceiling homes and Superior's older frame houses add a few wrinkles: shallow ceiling boxes and cloth-covered wiring left brittle by decades of bulb heat. If that insulation crumbles when the old fixture comes down, the repair goes to a licensed electrician before anything new goes up. A wobbling fan or a dead pull chain is usually a repair; a failing motor usually means a new fan. Recessed lights, or a fixture where no box exists, mean new wire, and the City of Duluth requires a permit for new light fixtures; a licensed electrician does that wiring, often as part of basement finishing or a bathroom remodel.

Repair, Replace or Call a Specialist? Electrical and Lighting

We swap fixtures, fans, switches and devices on existing boxes and wiring. Anything new, including added outlets, circuits or panel work, goes to a licensed electrician.

Detectors Aren't Optional Up Here

Heating season in the Northland runs seven months, and that's when CO risk peaks — furnaces, fireplaces, attached garages, and snow-blocked vents. Minnesota and Wisconsin both require CO alarms near sleeping areas. We install and date fresh units, place them where code and physics agree, and take the dead ones with us.

Lights and Ceiling Fans in Duluth, Superior and Nearby Towns

Our electrical work stops at fixtures, fans and switches on boxes that already exist. A new circuit, a new outlet or a new box in the ceiling is done by a licensed electrician under an electrical permit, and in Minnesota that permit and its inspection run through the state (Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry), not the town. The rule that matters at your address is whether the swap is like for like: the same kind of fixture, switch or fan, in the same place, on the same box.

Lights and Ceiling Fans in Duluth, MN

The City of Duluth says replacing a light fixture, switch or outlet like for like needs no permit, while installing a new fixture, outlet or circuit does. That covers most of what we do in Duluth: a dated flush mount swapped for a new one, a fan hung where a fan-rated box already is, a switch replaced with a dimmer.

Electrical permits in Duluth are applied for through the State of Minnesota, not the city (City of Duluth). If a fan is going where only a light exists today, or the old box can't carry a fan, the job becomes new work: a licensed electrician sets the box and wiring under the state permit, and the fan goes up after the inspection path is clear. We tell you at the quote which side of that line your ceiling is on.

Lights and Ceiling Fans in Superior, WI

Superior's Permits Not Required list includes like-for-like replacement of a switch, receptacle or light fixture in a one- or two-family home (City of Superior). A fixture or fan swapped onto an existing box stays on that list.

Electrical work beyond that does need a permit in Superior (City of Superior), so a new outlet, a new circuit or a fan in a spot with no existing box goes to a licensed electrician who applies for it. If you are unsure whether your swap counts as like for like, the building inspection office at (715) 395-7288 can answer before work starts.

Lights and Ceiling Fans in Hermantown

Hermantown contracts its building department out, and the City of Hermantown FAQ is the place to check what a building permit covers there. Electrical permits and inspections in Minnesota go through the state (Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry), so a new circuit or box for a ceiling fan follows the same licensed-electrician path as in Duluth, while a fixture swap on an existing box stays in our scope.

Lights and Ceiling Fans in Proctor

Proctor requires a permit for electrical work as well as for altering or repairing a building (City of Proctor), and its electrical inspections are handled by the state. That makes the line sharper here: send the fixture or fan model and a photo of the existing box, and the quote says whether it is a like-for-like swap we can do or new wiring for a licensed electrician.

The office that governs lighting & ceiling fan work changes from town to town; the Minnesota and Wisconsin permit lists name it, with a phone number and the exemptions it allows.

Getting a Lighting & Ceiling Fan Quote and How the Job Runs

What to Send for a Light Fixture or Ceiling Fan Quote

Start with two photos: the fixture or fan that's up now, and a wider shot of the room so we can see the ceiling height. Add the model number or a store link for the new fixture, plus its weight if it's a chandelier. Tell us if the light is on a dimmer, switched from two places, or already flickering. List every light, fan and switch you want changed, because quoting them together for one visit is the best value.

Before requesting a quote, include: Photos of the current fixture and the room; Model number or link for the new fixture or fan; Any dimmers, three-way switches or flicker. Gathering these takes a few minutes; the repair-list planning guide shows an easy order to do it in.

How a Lighting & Ceiling Fan Job Works

  1. Send the details. Call (715) 919-7956 or use the quote form; a short description of the lighting & ceiling fan job and a few photos are enough to begin.
  2. Get a flat written quote. Nothing begins until you approve the written quote, and the $95 fee for any visit is waived when you do.
  3. Pick a day. Once the quote is approved, you set the day.
  4. Work done, then a walkthrough. We clean up and go over the finished lighting & ceiling fan work with you, and the workmanship is guaranteed in writing: if it fails, we return and redo it at no charge.

Lighting & Ceiling Fan Questions

How much does ceiling fan installation cost?

Our planning range for installing a ceiling fan is $140–$280, plus the fan. Ceiling height, whether the box is rated to carry a fan, and whether a wall control is involved move the number. You get a flat quote before any work starts, and several fans or fixtures in one visit cost less each.

How much does it cost to replace a light fixture?

Our planning range for swapping a light fixture is $95–$220 per fixture, plus the fixture. A like-for-like swap on an existing box is at the low end; heavy fixtures, high ceilings and chandeliers take longer. Bundling several fixtures into one visit is the best value.

Do I need a permit to hang a ceiling fan or light in Duluth?

Not for a like-for-like swap. The City of Duluth says replacing a light fixture, switch or outlet like for like needs no permit, while installing a new fixture, outlet or circuit does. Superior's Permits Not Required list also covers replacing an existing light fixture. Putting a fixture or fan where there is no existing box is new work and needs a permit.

What electrical work won't you do?

Anything that adds to the wiring. Panel and service work, new circuits, new outlets or boxes, and knob-and-tube replacement go to a licensed electrician under an electrical permit. Our side is swapping fixtures, fans, switches and detectors on boxes that already exist. Not needing a permit doesn't settle who may do a swap, and damaged old wiring turns it into electrician work; we'll say which at the quote.

Can you put a ceiling fan where a light is now?

Often, if the box and ceiling can carry it. A fan needs a fan-rated box or brace, because its weight and motion can work a light-only box loose. Send the fan model and a photo of the current fixture. If the box isn't rated, a fan brace goes in first; if there's no usable wiring, a licensed electrician handles that under an electrical permit before the fan goes up.

My smart devices never stay connected. Can you help?

Often, yes, when the trouble is setup rather than the device. Tell us the device, the app and when the connection drops. Distance from the router, plaster walls with metal lath, and a device joined to the wrong Wi-Fi band are common reasons a doorbell or smart switch keeps falling off. Don't put Wi-Fi passwords in the quote form; we set that up with you at the visit.

How long does ceiling fan installation take in Duluth?

The install itself is short: Hunter's install guide puts a ceiling fan at about one to two hours. Add time for a fan brace when the old box isn't fan-rated, a plaster or high ceiling, or a dimmer that has to come out. A like-for-like swap needs no permit in Duluth or Superior, so the usual wait is for the fan to arrive. Your written quote gives the timeline.

Why do my LED bulbs flicker on a dimmer switch?

Usually because the dimmer was made for incandescent bulbs and can't control an LED's much smaller load smoothly. Replacing it with an LED-compatible dimmer and using bulbs marked dimmable clears up most flicker and buzzing. Swapping a dimmer on the same box is a like-for-like switch replacement, and our planning range for one is $85–$180. If lights flicker all over the house rather than on one dimmer, have a licensed electrician check the wiring.
