How Much Does a Handyman Cost in Duluth & Superior?

Most handyman work in Duluth and Superior is priced by the job, not the hour: a written quote you approve before work starts. The national hourly and service-call benchmarks below are planning context.

The Short Answer

For planning, this guide uses national benchmarks of $75–$125 per hour and $40–$95 for a service call from published 2026 price guides. These are not surveyed Duluth–Superior rates. Twin Ports Contracting & Repair quotes nearly everything as a flat rate approved upfront. See how we price jobs and the $95 call-out fee, which is waived when you approve the work.

Pricing a bigger project, such as a bathroom, kitchen or deck? Our home repair and remodeling cost guides give a planning range and what moves the price for each.

What Drives Handyman Pricing in the Twin Ports

Three factors set the price of any handyman job in Duluth or Superior: how long it takes, how hard it is to reach, and what it's attached to. A faucet swap in an accessible vanity is straightforward. The same faucet over a corroded 1920s shutoff valve in a Central Hillside home is a different job, and an honest quote says so before the wrench comes out.

Northland-specific costs are real, too. Our building season is short, so exterior work booked in peak summer competes for a narrow window. Minnesota code puts the minimum frost footing depth at five feet in St. Louis, Carlton, Lake and Pine counties (Minn. R. 1303.1600), and Wisconsin requires at least 48 inches or the frost line, whichever is deeper (Wis. Admin. Code SPS 321.16), so confirm the required foundation design for the actual structure and site before comparing quotes. Soil, drainage, access and the chosen foundation system also affect the work.

Handyman Project Planning Ranges in Duluth & Superior (2026)

What Handyman Work Costs in Superior, WI

The same company service-fee policy applies on both sides of the Twin Ports. The $95 visit fee, waived when you approve the work, and the planning ranges on this page are the same in Superior and nearby Wisconsin communities, with no mileage charge for crossing the bridge. Your flat quote is the real number.

Two things genuinely differ, and neither is a price:

  • Permits follow Wisconsin rules, not Minnesota's. The City of Superior requires a building permit for new construction, additions, alterations and repairs to homes, and its permit page names sheds and fences specifically (City of Superior building permits). We check what your address needs, and who the office requires to pull the permit, before we quote; the permit fee itself is passed through at cost, never marked up.
  • Check coverage for your property. Ask for a current certificate of insurance and confirm that it covers the proposed work and state. Do this before booking any contractor.

Check the Wisconsin town planning guide for your address, and the permit office list for which city, village or town issues permits there.

Hourly vs. Flat Rate: Which Is Better for You?

For a defined job, a flat rate is usually better: you approve one price for an agreed scope before work starts. A half-day or full-day block can suit a long list of small tasks, where you set the priorities and the number finished depends on each task's condition. Either way, compare the included work, materials and exclusions, and ask for the current block terms before booking one.

Handyman Hourly Rate vs. Handyman Wage in Minnesota

Look up handyman hourly rates for Minnesota and much of what comes back is salary data from job sites. That's the wage an employed handyman is paid, not the rate a customer is billed. A billed rate has to cover what a wage doesn't: liability insurance, workers' compensation for any employees, a work vehicle and fuel, tools, drive time between jobs, and the hours spent quoting work that never books.

The $75–$125 per hour in this guide is a national planning benchmark from published 2026 price guides, not a measured Duluth–Superior rate. Ask each provider for the scope, exclusions and actual price of your job. Minnesota's insurance minimums for licensed contractors are in our licensing guide.

How to Spend Less Without Getting Less

  • Group compatible tasks. Share the full list so ready work can use the same trip and setup where practical. Drying, access, ordered parts and separate trades may still require additional visits.
  • Send photos with your request. Clear pictures of each job make the quote faster and more accurate, and cut down on surprises once we're on site.
  • Fix small things early. Rot, leaks, and failing caulk never get cheaper. A small exterior repair this fall routinely prevents a much bigger interior repair next spring.
  • Book seasonal work early. Decks, exterior painting, and pressure washing booked in late winter get better scheduling than the same request in July.
  • Let us source materials. Not because it's cheaper, but because it eliminates wasted trips and wrong parts — which is where hidden cost actually lives.

Handyman vs. Contractor: Which Do You Need?

Hire a handyman for repairs, installs and small remodels, and a contractor or licensed trade for large remodels, structural changes and code-regulated work like panel wiring, gas lines and roofing. Minnesota draws the line by skills, not job size: work in more than one special-skill area needs a contractor license unless the $15,000 exemption applies.

Compare project scope, pricing and credential checks when choosing a handyman or contractor.
FactorHandymanContractor
Typical jobsRepairs, installs and small remodels: drywall patches, doors, trim, TV mounting, deck repairLarge remodels and code-regulated work: panel electrical, gas lines, structural work, roofing

Minnesota licenseNeeded once work spans more than one special-skill area, unless under the $15,000 exemptionResidential building contractor or remodeler license for multi-skill work; electrical and plumbing contractors have separate licenses; Minnesota mechanical contractors need a bond and applicable local credentials
Best forAccepted small repairs and prioritized punch listsLarge projects, and work that legally requires a trade license or an engineer

When a Handyman Isn't the Right Call

Honest boundaries save you money. New wiring is done by a licensed electrician under an electrical permit, and plumbing the code reserves for a licensed plumber goes to one. Gas, water-heater and HVAC work need the matching specialist, garage door springs go to a spring specialist, and roofing goes to a licensed roofer. We'll tell you when your job is one of these, so the next step matches the actual work. For multi-trade work, check whether a Minnesota contractor license is required.

Repair or Replace? The Quick Test

Repair when the structure underneath is sound and the failure has one fixable cause, like a worn part or poor drainage. Replace when the frame, board or block itself has failed. The table applies that test to five common items, with planning ranges from our price table.

Repair-versus-replacement planning questions for common home components.
ItemRepair whenReplace when
DeckJoists, beams, posts and ledger are sound; board & rail repair runs $800–$3,500The frame is soft or the footings have heaved (if only the boards are failing, re-deck the sound frame instead)
Retaining wallThe block is intact and the failure came from drainage or a settled base; we rebuild with your existing blockThe block is cracked or spalling from freeze-thaw, or the wall was built too tall for its design
Garage doorIt's noisy, shaky or sticking; a tune-up runs $120–$250Several sections are damaged, or the door is rotted or rusted through
Foggy double-pane windowThe frame is sound: replace only the failed sealed glass unit, or use an insert window ($400–$900 plus the unit)The frame is rotted or out of square: that calls for full-frame replacement, which costs more than an insert
DrywallHoles, cracks and dents up to fist-size ($125–$300 a patch)The board is soft, crumbling, sagging or moldy; a ceiling section runs $300–$900

Handyman Pricing FAQs

How much does a handyman cost in Duluth, MN?

For planning, this guide uses a national benchmark of $75 to $125 per hour from published 2026 price guides, not a survey of Duluth–Superior rates or our hourly quote. Twin Ports Contracting & Repair prices nearly all work as a flat rate quoted upfront, so you approve the exact number before any work begins. Single-item jobs, from furniture assembly to an interior door swap, have their own planning ranges in the table on this page; larger projects like decks and kitchen updates are quoted per project.

Do handymen in Duluth charge a service call fee?

Fees vary by provider. The $40 to $95 planning range in this guide comes from national price guides, not a survey of Duluth providers. Twin Ports Contracting & Repair charges a flat $95 service and dispatch fee for on-site visits anywhere in our service area, with no mileage charges, and that fee is waived entirely when you approve the work, so hiring us means you never pay it. How ours works: our call-out fee policy.

Why do salary sites show a lower handyman hourly rate than local quotes?

Salary sites measure the wage paid to an employed handyman, not the rate a customer is billed. A billed rate also has to cover insurance, workers' compensation for any employees, a vehicle, tools and travel time. The $75–$125 per hour used in this guide is a national planning benchmark, not a measured Duluth–Superior rate. Twin Ports Contracting & Repair quotes most jobs as a flat rate rather than by the hour.

Is it cheaper to hire a handyman or a contractor?

For small repairs and installs, a handyman is usually the cheaper call: one person can work through several small tasks in a visit without a project manager's overhead. For a large remodel or code-regulated work, a contractor or licensed trade is the right hire whatever the price, and even a small plumbing or electrical job can need one. Compare written quotes for the same scope, finish, materials and cleanup, and see the credential guide before deciding.

How can I lower the cost of handyman work?

Group compatible tasks to reduce repeated travel and setup where practical. Send photos, measurements and product details so the scope is clearer, and identify which repairs matter most. Ask what materials must be ready and whether drying or special-order parts require a return visit. Compare the written inclusions and total; grouping jobs does not guarantee a particular discount.

What affects the price of a handyman job the most?

Access and surprises. A second-story window, a tight crawlspace, or a job that needs scaffolding costs more than the same task at ground level. Hidden damage — rot behind siding, a corroded shutoff, water-damaged subfloor — is the other big one, which is why we stop and re-quote with photos rather than adding charges silently.

Does buying my own materials lower the price?

Not by much, in most cases. The labor price is the same either way, and materials we source are billed at receipt as their own line, so there's no hidden markup to dodge. Buying your own makes sense when you've already picked a fixture or finish you want. Send the model or a photo of the box before the day, so anything that doesn't fit the job gets flagged before it costs you a second trip.

Do handymen charge sales tax in Minnesota or Wisconsin?

Not on repairs and improvements to the house itself. Minnesota's Department of Revenue tells contractors not to charge sales tax on construction contracts, and Wisconsin's Publication 207 says a contractor's charges for improvements to real estate aren't taxable on materials or labor. In both states the contractor pays tax when buying the materials instead. Wisconsin treats items that stay personal property differently: installing or servicing furniture or a TV set can be taxable there.

How much does a handyman charge to install a toilet?

Our planning range for installing a toilet is $150–$300, plus the toilet itself. That covers setting it on a new seal, connecting the supply line, leak-testing and hauling the old one away. A soft or broken flange, a seized shutoff valve or a floor that needs repair adds to the price, and any change to the piping is done under the required plumbing permit. A photo of the toilet and the floor around its base is enough for a first quote.

How much does a handyman charge to replace a faucet?

Our planning range for a faucet replacement is $130–$260, plus the faucet. That includes new supply lines and a leak test. Corroded shutoff valves, a sink that has to come out, or a faucet with a different hole count than the sink can add time. A like-for-like swap that doesn't alter the water supply needs no permit in Duluth; moving or adding piping does. Send the faucet model and a photo under the sink.

How much does a handyman charge to patch drywall?

Our planning range for a small drywall patch is $125–$300 per patch, and a water-damaged ceiling section runs $300–$900 once the leak is fixed. Size, texture matching, drying time and whether you want it primed or fully painted set the price, and several patches in one visit share the trip. See drywall and ceiling repair for what each finish level includes.

How much does a handyman charge to install a door?

Our planning ranges are $180–$350 to swap a prehung interior door and $350–$800 to install an exterior door, plus the door either way. The exterior range includes flashing, foam, sealing and hardware. Out-of-square frames in older Duluth and Superior homes, rotted sills or a new opening size add work, so send the door size and photos of both sides of the frame.

How much does a handyman charge to replace a light fixture?

Our planning range is $95–$220 per fixture for a like-for-like swap on an existing box, and $85–$180 for a switch or outlet. Height, a heavy fixture that needs a stronger box, and the number of fixtures change the price. A new fixture location or new wiring is a job for a licensed electrician under an electrical permit, not a swap. Send photos of the old fixture and the new one's box.

Hourly and service-call benchmarks draw on national 2026 price guides: HomeGuide's handyman price list, Thumbtack's handyman rates and Housecall Pro's handyman price guide (reviewed August 2026). None of them gives a Duluth-specific rate. The hourly and service-call benchmarks are planning estimates based on those national figures, not a local survey or a quote. See our pricing page for exactly how we quote and bill.
