Assembly & Mounting

We Read the Instructions So You Never Have To

Some jobs aren't hard — they're just long, fiddly, and better with the right tools. A flat-pack wardrobe is two frustrating evenings for you and ninety practiced minutes for us. A 75-inch TV over the fireplace is a two-person job with stud finders, load math, and cable management — not a hope-and-drywall-anchor situation.

We assemble furniture, bikes, sports equipment, and patio and yard gear, and we mount TVs, shelves, mirrors, and anything else that goes on a wall — into studs or with anchors rated for the real weight. Moving in? Book a whole assembly day and turn the box maze into a furnished home before the weekend.

TV Wall Mounting: Choosing the Mount and Hiding the Cords

A TV mount comes down to the bracket, the backing and the cords. A fixed mount sits tightest to the wall, a tilting mount angles down when the screen hangs high, and a full-motion arm swings toward a corner chair but puts the most leverage on the wall, so a big arm-mounted screen belongs on two studs or solid masonry. A paintable raceway hides cords with no wall work; recessed plates route HDMI and low-voltage cables inside the wall. Hiding the power cord too usually means a new outlet behind the TV, which a licensed electrician installs under the electrical permit the City of Duluth requires for new outlets.

Many of Duluth's older homes and Superior's older frame houses have plaster over wood lath, where stud finders read poorly and careless drilling can crack the plaster loose from the lath. We confirm the studs, drill the plaster slowly and let the lag bolts, not the plaster, carry the TV. Brick and stone chimneys take masonry anchors set in sound material, not crumbling mortar. An old mount that sags or hangs on plastic anchors comes down, the holes get patched and the new one goes into framing. Finishing a basement? Plan blocking and a TV outlet into that wall during basement finishing, before the drywall goes up.

Floating Shelf Installation on Drywall, Plaster or Brick

The right shelf depends on what it will hold. Floating shelves hide their bracket inside the board, so every pound levers on a few screws at the wall; they look clean and suit display pieces, and anything heavier calls for a heavy-duty bracket lagged into studs. Shelves on visible brackets carry books and dishes more easily and forgive an uneven wall. Track systems, with metal standards screwed to the studs and adjustable brackets, fit pantries, closets, laundry rooms and garages where the spacing changes over time. Depth matters too: a deep shelf puts far more leverage on its fasteners than a shallow one of the same length.

Plaster walls in older Duluth and Superior homes are often wavy, so a long floating shelf can show a gap along the wall; bracket shelves or a shorter run hide it better. Where no stud lines up, a lighter shelf on hollow plaster over lath gets toggle bolts, because plastic anchors hold poorly in it. Basement block and stone walls take masonry anchors, and in a damp basement or garage near the lake, metal or sealed shelving outlasts particleboard, which swells. A shelf that pulled loose usually just needs patching and remounting; a sagging or swollen board gets replaced. Alcove or made-to-measure shelving is a carpentry and built-in project.

Repair, Replace or Call a Specialist? Mounting and Assembly

Mounting is mostly about what's behind the wall and how much load it carries. Use the table to see when we mount directly and when something else comes first.

The Move-In & Student Season Crew

Every August and September, the Twin Ports fills with new households — UMD, CSS, and UWS students, traveling medical staff, new hires at the port and clinics. That's assembly season: beds, desks, futons, TV mounts, and shelving, so book early if you're moving in then. Landlords and parents: we do multi-unit and dorm-day bookings, too.

Mounting and Assembly in Duluth, Superior and Nearby Towns

Hanging a TV or building a flat-pack dresser is the same job anywhere; what changes is the wall behind it and, for kit sheds, play sets and in-ground hoops, the rules for the yard in front of it. Duluth’s older plaster, Morgan Park’s concrete and Hermantown’s newer drywall each take a different fastener, and a storage shed that needs no permit in one town needs one in the next. Here is what differs by place, with the source for each rule; we check what your address needs before a shed kit is delivered.

TV Mounting and Assembly in Duluth, MN

An estimated 43% of Duluth’s housing was built before 1940 (Maxfield Research for the City of Duluth), and houses that age usually have plaster over wood lath, where stud finders read poorly and a careless bit cracks the plaster loose. We locate the framing before a TV bracket goes up and drill slowly, so the lag bolts carry the load, not the plaster, and a lighter shelf where no stud lines up gets toggle bolts. In Morgan Park, known for its concrete houses (Duluth News Tribune), brackets and shelves go on with masonry anchors instead, so tell us the wall type when you book.

For kit sheds and playhouses, Duluth needs no building permit for a one-story detached structure up to 200 square feet, but the zoning setbacks from property lines still apply (City of Duluth), so we check the setback for your zone before the base goes down. Anything anchored in the ground, from an in-ground basketball hoop to shed auger anchors, first needs a utility locate: Minnesota requires notice to the state’s one-call center at least 48 hours ahead, not counting the day of notice, weekends and holidays (Minn. Stat. 216D.04).

TV Mounting and Assembly in Superior, WI

Superior’s Permits Not Required list lets yard sheds under 64 square feet go up without a permit, along with a built-in bookcase and address numbers (City of Superior); a larger kit shed needs a city permit, since Superior requires permits for all accessory buildings (City of Superior).

That line sits far below Duluth’s 200 square feet, so an 8-by-10 kit that needs no building permit across the bridge needs one here. Digging for a hoop or ground anchors on the Wisconsin side takes at least 3 working days’ notice to the one-call system (Wis. Stat. 182.0175), a day longer than Minnesota. In the Village of Superior, permits go through the village office (Village of Superior).

Hermantown, Proctor and Rice Lake

Hermantown homes are much newer, with a median build year of 1993 against 1951 for Duluth (Census Reporter), so walls are far more likely to be drywall over studs, where a stud finder works and a TV bracket lags straight into framing. The city needs no building permit for a shed of 200 square feet or smaller (City of Hermantown). Proctor is stricter: even a small shed needs a zoning permit from the city (City of Proctor), so apply before the kit arrives. Rice Lake is its own city with its own permit office, so check its shed rules with the city before delivery.

Townships Around Duluth

In the townships St. Louis County zones, including Twig, Saginaw, Fredenberg and Canyon, the county requires a land use permit for building or moving structures (St. Louis County); ask the county whether your kit shed needs one before it is delivered. Duluth, Lakewood and Midway townships run their own zoning: French River and the rest of Duluth Township need a Town of Duluth Structure Land Use Permit for any building project, Lakewood issues land use zoning permits through its township zoning administrator, and Eldes Corner falls under a Midway Township land use permit. Each sets its own setbacks from lot lines.

Knife River, Larsmont and Two Harbors

Knife River and Larsmont sit in Lake No. 2 Unorganized Territory, where Lake County requires a land use permit for any structure over 3 feet tall meant to stay on the property, and it names pre-built and plastic resin sheds, woodsheds, greenhouses and steel containers (Lake County).

Even a small resin storage shed taller than 3 feet needs that permit before we assemble it, and a permanent play set or playhouse over 3 feet is worth asking the county about too. Inside Two Harbors, the city issues its own permits. Wind off Lake Superior is the other North Shore factor, so a shed here gets anchored to its base, not just set on blocks.

Esko, Rural Carlton County and the Douglas County Towns

Carlton and Douglas counties both regulate sheds of any size. Rural Carlton County, including Mahtowa, requires a zoning permit for building or moving any structure no matter the size, sheds and storage containers included (Carlton County), and Esko and Harney get zoning permits from the Town of Thomson. Across the state line, Douglas County requires permits for all accessory buildings regardless of use or size, possibly with a town building permit on top (Douglas County). That covers Riverview, Boylston, Dewey, Parkland and South Range, where Wisconsin’s 3-working-day locate notice applies to anything dug in.

Before a assembly & mounting job starts, it helps to know the office for your address. The Minnesota and Wisconsin lists give the name, phone number and exemptions for each town.

Getting an Assembly & Mounting Quote and How the Job Runs

What to Send for a TV Mounting or Shelf Quote

Text or email a photo of the wall taken straight on from across the room, with the outlet and any fireplace, window or corner in the frame. Add the TV's model number and the mount if you already bought one, or product links for shelves and anything to assemble. Tell us what the shelves will hold and whether the wall is plaster, drywall or brick; if you're unsure, the house's age helps. You get a flat written quote before any holes go in.

Before requesting a quote, include: A straight-on wall photo that shows the outlet; TV model or shelf product links, plus any mount you bought; What the shelves will hold and what the wall is made of. For a way to sort and prioritize the details, see the repair-list planning guide.

How an Assembly & Mounting Job Works

  1. Send the details. Send a few photos and a note on the assembly & mounting work you want done, by form or by text to (715) 919-7956.
  2. Get a flat written quote. You approve one flat price in writing before work starts, and the $95 visit fee, if a visit is needed, is waived when you approve the work.
  3. Pick a day. Choose a date that works for your household and the job is scheduled for it.
  4. Work done, then a walkthrough. When the assembly & mounting work is done we clean up and walk it through with you, and a written guarantee says we will redo failed workmanship at no charge.

Assembly & Mounting Questions

Can you mount a TV above a fireplace or on brick?

Yes — masonry mounting with the right anchors is standard for us, and for fireplaces we'll check clearances and heat before drilling, plus recommend a mantel mount if the height would strain your neck. If a wall genuinely can't hold your TV safely, we'll say so and offer options.

Do you haul away the boxes and packaging?

Yes, if you want it. We break down the boxes and foam, then haul the packaging away for a small add-on or stack it flat by your recycling bin at no charge. Keep the hardware bags, manuals and spare parts out of the pile until the build is done, since small parts often hide in the packing. Tell us at the quote which option you want.

How much does TV mounting cost?

Our planning range for TV-mounting labor is $100–$220, with the bracket extra if you need one. The wall decides most of it: drywall over studs is the simple case, while brick, plaster, a spot over the fireplace or in-wall cord concealment take longer. A new outlet behind the TV is new wiring for a licensed electrician under an electrical permit. The cost guide has other planning ranges.

How long does it take to mount a TV?

About an hour for a standard mount on drywall with the cords left in a surface raceway. Plan on two to three hours for in-wall cord concealment, a masonry or over-the-fireplace install, or a heavy full-motion arm. We bundle it happily with shelves, curtain rods or other wall work in the same visit.

Can you mount a TV on drywall without hitting a stud?

Usually not for a big screen, since many mounts are made only for wood studs, concrete or block. When the studs don't line up with where you want the TV, there are other answers: a mount with a wide wall plate or sliding rail that reaches two studs, blocking added behind the drywall, or, for a light TV on a fixed mount, hollow-wall anchors where the bracket's instructions allow them. Full-motion arms always go into framing.

How high should a TV be mounted?

Put the center of the screen at roughly seated eye level, which for most couches is about 42 inches off the floor. Over a fireplace, the screen usually ends up higher than that, which is why we often suggest a pull-down mantel mount. We'll hold the TV up at the height you're considering before we drill so you can check it from the couch.

My trampoline arrives Friday. Can you build it Saturday?

Maybe. Tell us the delivery date, the model and the days that work for you, and we'll confirm a slot before you count on it, since a Friday delivery doesn't guarantee a Saturday visit. Leave the boxes together where the trampoline will stand, and check that the spot is level and clear of fences, trees and overhead lines. Larger trampolines take two people to put together safely.

How much does it cost to hang shelves?

National handyman price data from Thumbtack puts a shelving job at about $199–$464, while built-in bookshelves, which are custom carpentry, run about $1,399–$4,925, according to HomeAdvisor. Those are U.S. ranges, not our prices. The number of shelves, the wall behind them (drywall, plaster or brick) and the weight they will carry set the work, and shelves can share a visit with a TV mount or other small jobs.

How much does a handyman charge to assemble furniture?

Our planning range is $80–$160 per item, and a long list can work out better as a half or full day. Send the product links, quantities and which pieces you need first. Tall dressers and bookcases get anchored to the wall with the tip-over kit from the box, and packaging haul-away is listed in the quote if you want it. The cost guide shows how small jobs are priced.

Can I mount a TV in an apartment or rental?

Usually, but get your landlord's written OK first, since many leases have rules about drilling into walls. Ask before you buy the mount, say where it goes and how the holes will be patched when you move out, and keep the reply. Older Duluth and Superior buildings often have plaster walls, so mention the wall type too. With a yes, we lag the mount into studs; with a no, a sturdy TV stand with an anti-tip strap is the renter-friendly option.

Does mounting a TV damage the wall?

Only a little, and it's repairable. A stud-mounted bracket leaves four to six lag-bolt holes plus any cord-plate cutouts. When a mount comes down, the holes get filled, sanded and touched up, and a cord-plate opening gets a small drywall patch. Plaster needs slower drilling so it doesn't crack loose from the lath. The real damage comes from mounts hung on plastic anchors that pull out. We patch old mount holes on the same visit; see drywall repair for bigger fixes.

Are TV mounting screws universal?

No. The hole pattern on the back of a TV follows the VESA standard, but the screw thread size and allowed length vary by model, so check the TV's manual or spec sheet. Wall mounts usually ship with a bag of assorted bolts and spacers to cover common TVs. Spacers fill the gap on TVs with a curved or recessed back so the bracket sits flat. A bolt that is too long can bottom out inside the TV and damage it, so never force one.

Should I anchor furniture to the wall?

Yes, especially dressers, bookcases and TVs in any home with kids. The Consumer Product Safety Commission's Anchor It campaign urges families to anchor TVs and furniture such as bookcases and dressers securely to the wall (Source). An anti-tip kit is a bracket on the wall, a bracket on the furniture and a strap between them (Anchor It). We anchor into studs as part of assembly, and the strap holes are easy to patch later.

Can you secure a TV without mounting it on the wall?

Yes. When anchoring to the wall isn't possible, the CPSC advises placing the TV on a sturdy, low base, pushing it back as far as it will go and keeping cords out of reach (Source). Strapping the TV to its stand, if the stand allows it, adds more security. Store remotes and toys away from the TV so kids aren't tempted to climb. A tabletop stand that bolts to the TV's VESA holes can also raise the screen without drilling the wall.

Should I tip for furniture assembly?

Tipping is your call, and it isn't built into anything we do. You get a flat written price before the first box is opened, and that quote covers the labor. Our planning range is $80–$160 per item, with move-in days priced as a half- or full-day block. Keep receipts and boxes until assembly is done, since some stores limit returns once a piece has been put together; check the store's return policy first.

Will a TV wall mount work for a computer monitor?

Only if the mount's hole pattern matches the monitor. Monitors normally use the VESA MIS-D pattern, 75 by 75 or 100 by 100 millimeters with M4 screws (VESA mount). Many large-TV mounts start bigger; the SANUS LLF122, for example, lists a 200 mm minimum (SANUS manual), so a monitor won't bolt on without an adapter plate. Look for a mount that lists 100 by 100 in its range, and check that the monitor has VESA holes at all.

Can a TV bracket go on a plasterboard wall?

Only when it's lagged into the studs or solid framing behind the plasterboard, which is the British name for drywall. SANUS, for example, says its LLF122 mount is designed only for wood studs, solid concrete or concrete block, that drywall alone will not hold the TV, and that the wall must support five times the weight of the TV and mount combined (SANUS manual). Follow your own mount's instructions. Older Duluth and Superior homes often have plaster over lath instead, which takes the same studs-first approach.

Is mounting a TV in a rental considered an alteration?

Your lease decides that, so read its alterations clause and get written permission before drilling. Breaking a lease term matters: Wisconsin lets a landlord give a tenant on a lease of a year or less 5 days' notice to fix a breach or move out (Wis. Stat. § 704.17), and Minnesota allows eviction when a tenant holds over contrary to the lease (Minn. Stat. § 504B.285). Minnesota landlords may also withhold deposit money to restore the unit, ordinary wear and tear excepted (Minn. Stat. § 504B.178). Not legal advice.

Can you return furniture after it's been assembled?

Sometimes; it depends on the store. IKEA's US policy, for example, takes unopened products back within 365 days and opened products within 180 days with proof of purchase (IKEA return policy). Other retailers set their own rules for assembled pieces, so read the policy before the boxes are opened. Keep the receipt, the boxes and leftover hardware until the piece is built and working. If something arrives damaged or short a part, we stop so you can contact the seller before we build around it.

Is mounting a TV hard to do yourself?

A small TV on a fixed mount over two studs is a manageable DIY job; the hard part is the wall, not the bracket. SANUS, for example, lists a stud finder, level, drill, the right bit and a socket wrench as tools, and says its mount is designed only for wood studs, solid concrete or concrete block (SANUS manual). So a TV can't go just anywhere: the spot needs framing or masonry behind it. Plaster over lath, brick or a heavy full-motion arm is where experience helps most.

Can I get TV mounting near me on short notice in Duluth or Superior?

We don't promise same-day TV mounting. Quotes usually go out within one business day of your photos, and most small-job visits are scheduled within a week. A mount is a quick job, so it often rides along with other items on your list. Text the TV size, the wall type and a photo of the spot to (715) 919-7956 and we will tell you what the soonest opening looks like.

Should I buy the TV wall mount myself?

Yes, as long as it fits your TV. The mount's VESA pattern has to match the four holes on the back of the TV, and its weight rating should sit comfortably above the TV's weight; both are in the TV's spec sheet. For a full-motion arm, buy a sturdy one, since the extended arm multiplies the load on the wall. Not sure which to get? Send the model number and we'll tell you which type fits, or source one and list it as its own line on the quote.
