How Much Does Siding Repair Cost in Duluth, MN?

Siding repair has no single price, and we do not publish a planning range for it. The number comes from a flat written quote after we see the wall. Four things set it: the siding material, how many panels or boards are damaged, whether the sheathing behind is dry, and whether the house is old enough to raise lead or asbestos questions.

What Drives the Cost of Siding Repair in Duluth and Superior?

A siding repair is priced from the wall, not from a catalog. Material comes first. Vinyl and steel panels come out and go back in as pieces, wood boards are cut out, primed and painted, and fiber cement needs dust control and the right blade. Each takes different labor, and matching an older profile can cost more than the panel.

The amount of damage matters next, but it is rarely the visible damage alone. A cracked vinyl panel is a small job. The same panel with soft sheathing behind it becomes a rot repair, and that is the line that moves a quote the most. We probe the sheathing, flashing and bottom course on the visit and list anything hidden as its own line.

Height and access count too. Duluth hillside lots often leave the back of a house a full story taller than the front, and a wall that needs staging costs more time than one reached from a ladder.

Older Houses: Lead Paint and Asbestos Change the Scope

An estimated 43% of Duluth homes were built before 1940 (Maxfield Research for the City of Duluth). On a house built before 1978, paid work that disturbs paint, such as scraping, sanding or cutting wood siding, falls under the EPA's lead rule (EPA). On a pre-1978 wall, we raise the lead question before we quote, and the quote says how that part is handled.

Cement-based siding on an older house is treated as a possible asbestos product. The Minnesota Department of Health advises against breaking, cutting or drilling it (Minnesota Department of Health). If a wall might be asbestos-cement, it is tested first, and if the test is positive, removal goes to a licensed abatement firm. That is a separate cost from our repair, so the test result comes before any siding quote is final.

Permits and Siding Repair by City

Permit rules decide whether a repair has paperwork attached, and they differ by city.

  • Superior: repairing siding on less than 25% of one wall, and soffit and fascia repair, are on the Permits Not Required list (City of Superior). A larger repair is a question for building inspection.
  • Duluth: siding has its own residential permit type (City of Duluth).
  • Hermantown: siding work requires a building permit (City of Hermantown).
  • Cloquet: re-siding requires a permit, storm-damage repairs included (City of Cloquet).

Permit fees, where a city charges them, are separate from our price. We start by checking what your address needs, and who the office requires to pull the permit, ahead of any quote.

How Can You Keep the Cost of Siding Repair Down?

The cheapest siding repair is the early one. Water that gets behind a loose panel or a failed caulk joint rots sheathing quietly, and the repair grows from a panel to a wall section. A fall walk-around, using the steps in our winterize checklist, catches lifted corners and open seams before the snow arrives.

Save any leftover siding from the original install, since a spare piece is the best match. Group repairs into one visit, such as siding, trim, caulking and gutters, so setup and cleanup are shared; the exterior repairs and pressure washing page covers the rest. For a storm claim, photograph every damaged area before anyone touches it.

How to Get Your Flat Written Quote

Send photos of the whole wall and close-ups of each damaged spot, the siding material if you know it, and the year the house was built. That is enough for most quotes, and some walls need a visit to probe the sheathing. Compare typical project ranges on the handyman cost page and see how quotes work on the pricing page, and see Duluth and Superior coverage.

Reach us at (715) 919-7956, or request a flat written quote; the $95 fee for a visit is waived once you approve the work. The quote lists the repair, any rot or trim lines and the old-house steps, and you approve it before anything starts.

Common Questions

Why won't you give a price range for siding repair?

Because siding jobs vary too much for a range to help. Material, damage, hidden rot, height and house age each change the work, and a national average can't see the wall in front of us. We would rather quote the wall we see. A photo or a short visit is enough, and the written quote is the number you approve before work starts.

Does hidden rot behind siding add to the cost?

Yes, and it is a common reason a siding quote grows. Soft sheathing has to be replaced and the area flashed before new siding goes on, which adds labor and materials. We probe the usual spots on the visit, at the bottom course, around windows and below roof edges, and list any rot as its own line on the flat quote, so you see it before approving.

Does a pre-1978 house cost more to re-side or repair?

It can, because paint on older wood siding may contain lead and the work can be covered under the EPA's lead rule when it is done for pay. On a pre-1978 house we raise it before quoting, and the quote states how that part is handled, including whether a certified firm must do it. Tell us the build year when you call.

Who pays for asbestos siding testing and removal?

You do, separately from our repair. If a wall of older cement siding might contain asbestos, we leave it alone, a certified inspector samples it, and a positive result goes to a licensed abatement firm that removes it. The testing and abatement are quoted by those professionals, not by us. After the material is cleared, we can install the replacement siding on a flat price in writing.

Do permit fees count in the siding repair price?

No, permit fees are separate from our price where a city charges them. Superior's no-permit list covers repairing siding on less than 25% of one wall, while Duluth, Hermantown and Cloquet require a permit for siding work. We check what your address needs, and who the office requires to pull the permit, before we quote, so any fee is known up front.
