Wallpaper Removal: Scoring, Steamers and Safety in Old Homes

Which wallpaper peels off dry, when scoring helps, what to soak it with, when a steamer earns its rental, and how to keep the wall underneath intact.

Wallpaper in Duluth homes usually comes off with water, time and a wide scraper. Peel the top layer if it lets go, score it only if water can't soak in, wet it with warm water or a wallpaper stripper, then scrape and wash off the paste. Steam painted-over or stubborn layers, and treat old paint underneath as possible lead.

Which wallpaper is easiest to remove

How hard wallpaper removal is depends almost entirely on what's on the wall. Start with a test: pry up a corner with a putty knife and pull slowly. If the whole sheet comes away, it's strippable, and you're nearly done. If a printed layer peels off and leaves paper behind, it's peelable. If it tears into small pieces, it's traditional paper or it's been painted over, and water has to do the work.

How each kind of wallpaper comes off
Wallpaper typeHow it comes offGood to know
StrippableLift a corner and pull it off dryWash the leftover paste off before painting
PeelableThe printed layer peels off; a paper backing stays onSoak and scrape the backing
Traditional paperSoak until the paste softens, then scrapeOften two or three layers deep in older homes
Vinyl-coated or fabric-backedPeel the face if it lets go; score it if water beads upThe coating keeps water away from the paste

Peel-and-stickPeels off without waterThe renter-friendly choice; can lift paint that was poorly bonded

Is wallpaper easier to remove now? Newer strippable and peel-and-stick papers are made to come off, so yes, for recent installs. Older homes in Duluth and Superior are the hard case, because it's common to find several layers hung over each other and sometimes painted. Can wallpaper be removed and reused? Not usually. Traditional paper tears and its paste is dissolved on the way off; some peel-and-stick can be rehung once if it comes off clean.

Scoring, soaking and steaming: the removal steps

Scoring punches small holes through a water-resistant face so liquid can reach the paste behind it. That's its only purpose, so skip it on plain paper that soaks up water on its own. On vinyl or painted paper, Zinsser's instructions for its PaperTiger scoring tool call for perforations no less than one inch apart and warn against pressing, because excessive pressure may damage the wall surface (Zinsser PaperTiger data sheet). On drywall, that damage means cuts in the paper face that show through paint later, so let the tool roll lightly.

For the soak, warm water with a squirt of dish soap loosens a lot of old paste. Some people add white vinegar to the hot water; it's a common home mix, but there's no one magic ratio, and a commercial stripper is more predictable on stubborn paste. Zinsser's DIF concentrate, for example, mixes 10 ounces into a gallon of warm water.

Its data sheet says to apply it with a garden-type sprayer, sponge or roller, wait 15 minutes, apply again, then scrape a small rewetted section at a time, and finally sponge off leftover adhesive and rinse with clean water (Zinsser DIF data sheet). The same sheet notes that some borders were hung with an adhesive that doesn't dissolve in water and need longer soaking.

Work one wall at a time so the paper doesn't dry out before you scrape it, protect the floor and outlets, and turn off the power to any outlet or switch you'll be wetting around.

Renting a wallpaper steamer, and when you need one

A steamer earns its rental on painted-over paper, thick layers and paste that shrugs off a soak. Where can you rent a steamer for wallpaper removal? Big-box tool rental counters list them; Home Depot's rental catalog includes an electric wallpaper steamer, and local rental shops may carry one, so call ahead to check it's in. Home centers also sell small steamers if you have several rooms to do.

Hold the plate on one spot until the paper softens, scrape, and move on. Steam is kinder to plaster than to drywall: plaster tolerates it well, while drywall's paper face can soften, bubble and tear if you linger. Wear gloves and long sleeves, because the plate and the dripping water are hot, and be careful working overhead.

Will wallpaper ruin walls? Protecting what's underneath

Wallpaper doesn't ruin walls by itself; the risk depends on what it was hung on. Plaster, common in older Duluth houses, usually comes through fine and may simply show cracks the paper was hiding; our plaster versus drywall repair guide covers those. Drywall that was papered without a primer or sizing is the trouble spot: the paste bonds to the drywall's paper face, and removal can peel that face off and expose brown paper.

If that happens, stop soaking. Wet brown paper bubbles and gets worse. Let it dry, seal it with an oil-based or shellac primer, then skim-coat the torn areas smooth before painting. That's routine drywall repair, not a reason to replace the wall.

Will wallpaper rip paint off? Peel-and-stick can pull up paint that was poorly bonded, or that went on over a glossy surface without primer. And why would wallpaper fall off the wall? Usually moisture or paste failure: a bathroom without a working exhaust fan, a damp exterior wall or paper hung without sizing. Peeling seams, stains and fading are also the signs it's time to replace wallpaper rather than patch it.

Wash the wall until it no longer feels slick, since leftover paste can make new paint crack, then prime. Our planning range for painting a room afterward is $350–$900; the flat written quote is the real number, and it depends on layers, wall condition and room size. Papering and painting need no permit in Duluth, and wallpaper is on Superior's no-permit list.

Is removing old wallpaper dangerous?

It's safe when you know what's under it. In a home built before 1978, paint on or beneath the paper may contain lead, and scraping or steaming it creates lead dust. The EPA requires anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in pre-1978 homes to be lead-safe certified.

Homeowners working on their own home are generally exempt, though the EPA recommends hiring a lead-safe certified contractor or following lead-safe practices yourself (EPA). Test old paint first.

Can removing wallpaper make you sick?

The paper itself rarely does; what's behind it or on it can. Lead dust from old paint is the main risk in older homes, and mold can grow behind paper on damp walls or in bathrooms. Strippers matter too: Zinsser's DIF data sheet calls for good cross ventilation, goggles, chemical-resistant gloves and a NIOSH-approved respirator when spraying.

Keep kids and pets out of the room.

Do I need to score wallpaper before removing it?

Only if water can't get through the face. Plain paper soaks up water on its own, so scoring just adds cuts. Vinyl-coated, fabric-backed and painted-over papers repel water, so scoring lets the soak or stripper reach the paste.

Roll the scoring tool lightly, especially on drywall, because pressing hard cuts the paper face and leaves marks that show through fresh paint.

What is the best wallpaper removal solution?

Warm water with a little dish soap handles a lot of old paste, and a commercial wallpaper stripper is the more reliable choice when that stalls. What matters more than the recipe is dwell time: wet the paper, wait about 15 minutes, wet it again and scrape while it's still damp.

For painted-over or layered paper, a steamer is usually faster than any liquid.
